Chris Dahlke

Artist Statement:

[in]animate explores the vast banks of faded memories humans possess. Through off-set audio-visual looping, this piece seeks the tangible emotional effects memories can have on the present moment given new sensorial or experiential contexts. Dahlke uses digitally abstracted snapshots of nature as well as tape hiss, field recordings, and sparse drones and melodies to explore nostalgia in a modern landscape. The two buttons in the center of the space can be used to move from one auditory “memory” to another or simply fade to silence.

Bio:
Chris Dahlke is a musician, composer, video artist, and live performer from Wallingford, Pennsylvania. He started playing classical violin at age four, and after developing a love for composing and improvising through bluegrass fiddle music, began composing his own music at age 12. Much of his work is inspired by Buddhist and Zen practices. Through his work, he seeks to express inexplicable emotions, provide a relatable context for the listener, as well as create a space to dwell in. He hopes to bring his passion for collaboration and live performance into the world of his electronic music while he pursues a Bachelors of Music in Technology in Music and Related Arts.

Chris would like to thank The Firelands Association for the Visual Arts (FAVA) and the incredible faculty of the Oberlin Conservatory TIMARA department for making this installation possible.
